Insulin: The Silent Killer: Understanding the Role and Effects of Insulin in Your Body and How to Keep It Stable (Understanding Insulin and Diabetes Book 1) Kindle edition. The book contains very useful information.

If you want to find out more about insulin, this book is brilliant. I would really recommend it/5(10). One of two books often suggested to diabetics being introduced to insulin therapy, "Using Insulin" suffers from the need for a major rewrite, but still has formulas and suggestions that are of use.

The book discusses at length two insulins: Lente and Ultralente, that were discontinued about 8 years ago/5(42).

The book opens with a very readable and non-judgmental explanation about insulin resistance – what it is and why you may have it.

It goes on to explain that although diet can be instrumental in helping overcome or lessening this condition is it certainly no magic bullet /5(39). The book edition I read was the updating of "The Discovery of Insulin" where Dr Bliss not only answers his first edition "The Discovery of Insulin" by Michael Bliss has to be considered the definitive word on the trials and tribulations on how insulin was discovered.4/5.

Originally published in and updated inThe Discovery of Insulin has won the City of Toronto Book Award, the Jason Hannah Medal of the Royal Society of Canada, and the William H. Since the introduction of insulin analogs ininsulin therapy options for type 1 and type 2 diabetics have expanded. Insulin therapies are now able to more closely mimic physiologic insulin secretion and thus achieve better glycemic control in patients with diabetes. This chapter reviews the pharmacology of available insulins, types of insulin regimens, and principles of dosage selection Cited by: 4.

In the pancreas, exocrine tissue known as the islets of Langerhans contain beta cells. Beta cells are responsible for insulin synthesis. By monitoring levels of glucose, amino acids, keto acids, and fatty acids circulating within the plasma, beta cells regulate the production of insulin : Elizabeth Vargas, Maria Alicia Carrillo Sepulveda.

Rob Thompson, a board certified internist and cardiologist has written The Insulin Resistance Solution which explains how to reverse prediabetes, lose belly weight, and prevent type 2 diabetes. The book jumps right in to explain how people didn’t. The author has provided a most informative and interesting account of the discovery of insulin.

It is hard to imagine practicing medicine when Type 1 diabetes could only be treated by starvation and rapid death still inevitable. This book is a great account of the process of medical research and the people who tackle its many positives and negatives/5(38).

Insulin is a hormone that works by lowering levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Insulin detemir is a long-acting insulin that starts to work several hours after injection and keeps working evenly for 24 hours.

Insulin detemir is used to improve blood sugar control in people with diabetes n detemir is for use in adults and children at least 2 years old/ The book reviews the normal biology of insulin action on glucose, lipids and proteins.

It considers the pathological basis for insulin resistance in animal models and humans, and discusses the influence of heredity, dietary factors and exercise.

Insulin is a pancreatic hormone that plays an essential role in regulation of blood glucose as well as lipid and carbohydrate metabolism.

Both natural and recombinant forms of insulin are used therapeutically to treat type 1 diabetes. Insulin and Glucose work throughout the body. Insulin NPH is an intermediate-acting insulin formulation which is usually administered subcutaneously once or twice daily.

When compared to insulin regular, insulin NPH has a slower onset and longer duration of activity. Insulin doses should be individualized based on patient needs; adjustments may be necessary with changes in physical /   High HOMA-IR: Above indicates early insulin resistance; above indicates significant insulin resistance.

These doses are delivered repeatedly throughout the day. There are several different kinds of insulin pumps available. Inhaled insulin (Afrezza).

This type of insulin is rapid-acting and you inhale it at the beginning of each meal. The book presents a qualitative and quantitative approach to understand, manage and enforce the integration of insulin into diabetes mellitus.

Utilizing a sound theoretical and practical foundation and illustrating procedural techniques through scientific examples, the book bridges the gap between insulin and diabetes mellitus management.

Detailed procedures have been omitted because of the Author: Gaffar Zaman. The insulin index of food represents how much it elevates the concentration of insulin in the blood during the two-hour period after the food is ingested.

The index is similar to the glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL), but rather than relying on blood glucose levels, the Insulin Index is based upon blood insulin levels.

Insulin resistance can be said to exist “whenever normal concentrations of hormone produce a less than normal biological response”.1 In the s, Himsworth first differentiated patients with diabetes mellitus into “insulin sensitive” and “insulin insensitive” based on the ability of subcutaneous insulin administration to dispose of an oral glucose load.2 He further suggested that.

Yes—and no. In Decemberthe Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the long-acting human insulin analog Basaglar (insulin glargine injection). Basaglar is similar to the insulin glargine injection Lantus, and the approval of Basaglar relied in part on the FDA’s finding of safety and effectiveness for Lantus.

In Europe, the analogous product is considered [ ]. The pancreas is a long, slender organ, most of which is located posterior to the bottom half of the stomach (Figure ).

Although it is primarily an exocrine gland, secreting a variety of digestive enzymes, the pancreas has an endocrine function. Its pancreatic islets —clusters of cells formerly known as the islets of Langerhans.

The insulin itself, derived from animal pancreases, caused allergic reaction in some patients. Further, for many decades, patients could only test their glycemic levels with urine. Things gradually improved. InNovo Nordisk, Inc. introduced the first slow-acting insulin.

In my post "Obesity Is Always and Everywhere an Insulin Phenomenon" I explain why insulin is so central to brief, among its many other effects insulin is an instruction to fat cells to take in blood sugar and turn it into stored fat. As a result, knowing the details of what ramps up your body's insulin production is much more helpful for weight loss than counting calories.
